How to set one hard spending cap across OpenAI and Anthropic together
OpenAI's own spend limits stop at OpenAI. If a team calls both OpenAI and Anthropic, a shared cap has to live somewhere that sees both.
Route both providers' traffic through Spendline and set one budget at the org or team scope. Because enforcement happens in Spendline's request path rather than inside either provider's own dashboard, the cap spans both providers instead of being duplicated and unsynced across two separate limits.
How Spendline does this
A hierarchical budget is not tied to a provider; it is tied to a scope (org, team, agent, or customer) and totals whatever spend is attributed to that scope, regardless of which provider produced it. A team spending $3,000 on OpenAI and $2,000 on Anthropic against a $6,000 team cap is at $5,000 against that one number, not two separate half-visible numbers.
Why it matters
Provider-native limits are provider-native by definition: OpenAI's hard spend limits only ever see OpenAI traffic. A team routing both providers through native limits alone has two unrelated caps and no shared view of total spend, exactly the blind spot a single team-wide budget is supposed to close.
Frequently asked questions
Does this replace each provider's own limits?
It does not need to for enforcement to work. Spendline's budget check happens before the call regardless of what limits are also configured natively on the provider side. Keeping both is not harmful; the Spendline-side cap is the one that actually spans providers.
Can the shared cap still be broken down by provider afterward?
Yes. The underlying ledger records which provider and model produced each call, so the combined budget number can still be split back out by provider for reporting even though the enforcement itself is provider-agnostic.
